It is an adjustment, but most of the external failure modes lead to harsh shifts. It might flare from wear, from weak springs (k-1 spring??), or maladjusted vacuum valve or modulator. If something goes wrong where you have weak or no vacuum, it shifts hard.

I think I'd discount flaring as a sign of wear if the time from park to reverse was good. If it takes more than two seconds to engage reverse, then I might use flaring as an additional sign of wear.
