That sounds very similar to the symptoms when my head gasket blew (603.971). Oil started leaking into the #1 cylinder. Be careful about cranking/running it at all now. When I pulled the head, the #1 piston did not protrude as far as the others and I had to replace the connecting rod. Looking back, the bent rod could have been caused by hydrolock from the oil seeping into the cylinder from the extended cranking and short runs I made when I was diagnosing the problem. All that oil made the compression test results flaky so I was scratching my head for a while. Sometimes the compression on #1 would be 100 psi lower than the others, sometimes it would be 150 higher. I finally chanced to look into the prechamber when #1 was at TDC after I had been cranking the engine for a compression test and saw oil rising to cover the glow plug. Had that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach...
