I had a 73(?) F250 company truck back in the day. on a good day with
a tailwind, it might get 10 MPG. But only if you drove like a
supermileage contest winner. What you have is pretty normal. I'd be
sorely tempted to put a newer SBC in it. THat probably would not
improve the mileage noticeably. Most of it is gearing and wind
resistance. With the 15 gal tank, it didn't go far between stops.
I had a 67 bronco with the 170 in it. It got 10 MPG under the same
conditions. I found a 289 that I knew got 17 MPG, and put that in.
It got 10 MPG also.
Both made by old 190Dc Look like a supermileage car@ 30MPG.
To set the record straight, with 75,000 miles on the odometer, this
is a 1972 Ford F250 Camper Special with dual gas tanks, dual
batteries, the nearly bullet-proof C6 automatic transmission, and
rear overload springs that make it suitable for inducing labor for
anyone past her due date. Doesn't sag under a heavy load. Alas, I
never got better than 9 mpg. I called the original owner, who stated
he never got better than 11 mpg. It doesn't get even the nine
anymore. I know nothing about rear end ratios, but I'll bet it is
geared down, as the engine is turning over pretty fast at 55 mph.
Oh, and without the camper, there is no increase in mpg's, a fact
which baffles me. Long distance trucks carrying heavy loads with two
trailers on 18 to 22 wheels get better mileage than does this
pickup. 'Course they're diesel. I guess the 12.5 X 16.5 rear
wheels/tires don't help the mileage, but they sure make travelling
on sandy desert roads a joy. Discovered recently that the 16.5 tires
are no longer manufactured. If you want new tires, gotta get new
wheels. It still has the original fuel pump. Not bad for 40 years of
light service. Its only claim to fame is that it was used in the
filming of the Cameron Crowe film "Almost Famous". It sat the whole
time collecting its per diem in the basement of the San Diego Sports
Arena and was not visible in the movie.
