I think beauty derives from function. Specifically, great cars eventually become the standard for beauty and vice versa. Ford Taurus was a funny looking car at first but after people liked and accepted it the jelly bean style became the new standard. Mazda and others copied the 123/126 styling and the Edsel became ugly only after it failed in the market.
