This happening without the solenoid retracting the plunger and causing the pinion to engage the ring gear. Replace the solenoid, or better yet, replace the whole starter with a Bosch rebuild from Rusty. When I did an engine rebuild several years ago both gears looked fine and I've never heard it grind as if missing teeth (like my MGB). What's the best course of action?
