An easy way to identify if the cable has worn and the gears are not staying 
engaged is to find the cable and move it around while you have someone hit the 
switch.

I used to have some luck with tie wrapping the cable in a different spot, so as 
to put some pressure on the jacket and force the gear into the gearbox.

That will buy you some time until you have to finally replace the cable.
