Then last night took a long RT to Columbia, MD (25 miles each way).
On the way out, at milepost 10 I got hit with a rich smell of burnt
engine air. This lasted 5 minutes before going away! On the way back,
at 9 PM, I drove in both highway and stop and go traffic using the
same ACC settings as the earlier trip. The smell never came even once!

I am beginning to think I am more in need of a compression test on the
exhaust system, as this is a DRY smell that IMO is not sweet enough to
be coolant. I do not have any coolant leaks under the hood, and my
thinking is that if the heater core were leaking the smell would be
more or less continuous. Therefore, the episodes of smelly air are
caused by the fumes entering through the outside air intake (the two
grilles beneath the front w/s) that are controlled by something
episodic... Unless something else is possible?

Thanks again for all your interest.
