Done the road to Hana several times. One time we flew into Maui on the day
a tsunami was expected to hit the island. Our pilot told us we would depart
PDX, but if it looked bad we would turn back before we got halfway.though
the threatened tsunami never hit, when we arrived Kahului (late!) the car
rental place had moved most vehicles to high ground and we were given a
full-size P/U instead of the compact SUV we had reserved. Some of the tight
turns onto narrow bridges were difficult even at a crawl!

But Maui and the up-country area near Hana are well worth it! We'll be back
there in a few weeks. As of last year the road is actually quite improved.

<<The road to Hana is famous for its twisties, and the rental car places let
you drive it. The saddle road just didn't get the positive spin in the
"press" that the Hana road got.
