With the exeption of an EMP you START THE ENGINE AND DRIVE THE CAR.

For chrissakes the Volt has an engine. You make fun of it because you think its 
an electric car but you're wrong.

Besides which what if something bad happens and you don't have any gas in your 
car? Failure to plan is failure to plan, doesn't make any difference which car 
you've got.

In a real serious earthquake when the bridges are out where you gonna go anyway?

Let's say, it's winter..or earthquake... or hurricane season...or solar
flare EMP.... the power grid is down for days and you have no electricity,
your new "special jama juice fuel additive" is at the store miles away.
Your government funded, echo friendly, $250,000 Chevy Volt [before special
rebates and programs and hidden costs] is in a discharged state.
You and your family need supplies, medicine, emergency treatment... phone
is out along with the power grid... your Urea fed EPA approved shiny new
car now shuts it's self off and will NOT start or run because the EPA
bureaucrat has mandated it has to remain clean at all costs [even your life
if necessary]...... feeling jocular yet?

No... I was not being funny... I was being practical in an un-practical
world.
Sorry if it offended you.

I've lived through enough natural disasters in this lifetime to look at,
and plan for, realistic alternate plans. Waiting in my storm destroyed home
for FEMA to come save me, with a new but dead car, doesn't suit my life
plan.
