Not this again. So Porsche has made a mistake in specifying M1 0W40 across the line, then? My friend ALC's 2012 Porsche 991 Carrera S, 3.8 liters, 400 hp, 186mph on the way to Starbucks, needs "thicker"oil?

I say 15/50 only because it's cheap and you can still buy it at Walmart.

We're not talking about your pooch, we're talking about a 240D, in Arizona IIRC.
If 15w-50 is the wrong stuff for my E320, perhaps 0w40 isn't the best stuff for a car that likes the 15w50 just fine. Two entirely different MBZ specifications there.
