We're not talking about your pooch, we're talking about a 240D, in Arizona IIRC. If 15w-50 is the wrong stuff for my E320, perhaps 0w40 isn't the best stuff for a car that likes the 15w50 just fine. Two entirely different MBZ specifications there.

Mitch.

Careful! You will cloud Woger's thinking with facts!

Fact is that 0-40 is not good for the OM61x and 60x engines unless it is below 0, then it is tolerable. Hardly weather for the SW US. 0-40 makes the lifters rattle at least. If the lifters rattle, I can't think it is good for the crank bearings. Oil consumption in 60x goes up with 0-40. I have never used it in 61x because it does not meet the spec, but i'd think consumption would go up there too.

Original oil specs varied a little between 1975 and 1991, but in general, 10w-40 Diesel oil meets the applicable specs. M1 CF 15w-50 met the spec, and based on Curt's oil analyses, still meets the spec without the CF certification.

On my OM616 engines, I use Dino oil. The soot buildup is much faster than with OM60x. I tend to run the 60x on longer trips, so M1 is the oil there. The OM616 240Ds generally are short trip cars, and therefore, needs to be changed more often, so dino oil works and keeps the soot down.
