Whenever we have bought or sold property we have a lawyer, basically to check the paperwork and to make sure all is being done as it should be. Also, the presence of a lawyer in a real estate transaction seems, at least from our experience, to make what would otherwise be big issues little ones. When the seller, realtor or bank starts creating trouble, a quick "bring them back to center" call from the lawyer has always gotten things back on track.
For the life of me, I can't understand why someone would engage in the most expensive financial transaction they would probably ever be involved in without retaining counsel...
