It was that way in suburban Wisconsin.  When I lived in Port Washington they 
were all over the gardens, chewed up the ornamentals, etc., especially if there 
was a lot of snow cover.

We had a small heard that lived somewhere in the neighborhood.  You could set 
your clock at night by there trek down the middle of the street, around 11:00 
pm.  They would start at one end and "peel off" a few at a time into different 
yards based on what they felt like eating that night.
