The battery feed to the large terminal is normally a hefty black cable. The less-hefty but still substantial red wire goes back into the loom, feeding the entire vehicle, including the ignition switch, charge circuit, etc, etc. On later W123 models from MY1982 and later there's a terminal strip on the inner fender. Presumably the W201 has a similar connector. A problem there would also cause a similar failure condition.
