Wow, that's a commute even by Curt's standards! Wouldn't want to sign up for too many 8am classes! Harvard would let him meet and study with other smart people. I don't think I got a bad education at NC State, but I didn't meet a lot of exceptionally brilliant folks. On the other hand, there are much more cost-effective ways to meet smart people. :) Depending on his degree it may or may not be a big difference. Technology seems less driven by the institution, but I know that managers often give preference to their alma mater when hiring upstream. Remember that the Ivy League has access to a lot of money for its students. If they want him to come, they can make sure he has food and shelter, even though he doesn't necessarily have the resources to pay for it on his own. Rich recently made an insightful post to banned about the difference between MIT and his undergrad experience, I'll forward it to you. I would expect the difference between UNC and Ha!vard would be comparable.
