Great ideas, but this is a VERY imperfect world. Very few of the people meeting the criteria that the recent evil doers meet actually commit violence. You catch and hold way too many to catch too few, and still don't know who is dangerous and who isn't. I suspect that it is true that the widespread availability of guns increases the use of them in cases where the lack of one would deter some acts. However, we're still talking relatively small numbers.
If you want to get upset about senseless deaths, go after road rage and drunken driving. I'm far more scared of idiots with cars than idiots with guns. I don't see anything in the constitution that says you have a right to exceed the posted speed limits or drive under the influence of any drug, unlike the right to bear arms.
