There is a small cross member that holds the carrier bearing, which you have to take down to do the rear flex disk anyway, else the shaft won't move enough to get it off the flex disk.

When you put it back together, be careful not to get the clamp nut too tight -- reef down on it and it will cause the shaft to vibrate, it has to move very sightly to allow the differences in length due to the u-joint. Will sound and feel like a bad muffler if you get it too tight.
