Hartinger sounds familiar, but I did not know 'im.

Your mention of partitions reminds me: Headquarters for my operation were at Chidlaw Bldg. in Co. Springs. Couple of the civilian mechanical and electrical engineers involved with me in the power plant generator engine rebuild and replacement project at Sondrestrom were separated from each other in the Chidlaw Bldg. were separated from each other only by GSA partitions - partitions only about 5 feet tall; metal about 3 feet or so up from the floor and translucent plastic above that. One could stand and easily peek over them. Several times I would receive a call from one of the engineers not long after the end of my normal duty day and have to spend up to 2 hours sometimes explaining stuff to 'im, only to get a second call from the guy in the cubicle right next to 'im wanting to talk to me about the same thing I had just explained to the first one. 'Finally asked the second one one day, "Did you hear Mr. XX in next cubicle on the phone for the last 2 hours? He was on the phone with me! Can't you guys work out a way to get on the phone together? I've been talking so long now, I can hardly speak." They finally did after doing that to me 2 or 3 times. I couldn't understand why they couldn't speak to each other over or through the partition.

BTW, I talked on phone several times with BGen. Paulk there at HQ; also visited with 'im at least 3 times, twice in Co. Springs and once at Sondy. On one of my trips to Co. Springs, Gen Paulk and I noticed each other as we were getting on airplane at Denver. Gen. Paulk talked to stewardess, who got guy in seat beside him to switch with me. As we were arriving at Co. Springs, Gen. Paulk inquired of me, "Wilt, do you have a ride to your hotel?" I responded, "No, Sir, but I'm picking up an Air Force car at Peterson AFB Motor Pool." He replied, "Ride with me, then, I'll drop you off." While The Gen. and I were waiting for our bags, a mighty fine-looking, young blond female captain (in civilian clothes) I had known in the B-52 unit in MI 3 or 4 years before came running toward me squealing, "Wilton! Wilton!" (Gen. Paulk and I were in uniform.) The fine-looking captain and I hugged enthusiastically, and chatted a bit, and, as our bags were showing up, she asked, "Do have a ride Wilt? I'll drop you off somewhere if you need it." I replied, "No thank you, I'm riding with Gen. Paulk. He's gonna drop me at the motor pool." As the fine young thing went tripping off, Gen. Paulk said, "Wilt, you're dumber than I thought; I'da gone with HER." I replied, "Well, I guess that shows how tough I am, too."

The other day in another of your Sondy tales you mentioned getting
equipment sourced through Colorado Springs. It reminded me of the
4-star I met when we lived there - Jim Hartinger. He told the story
about his command at NORAD and the partitions between military staff
there. When he took command at NORAD he took those partitions down.
A very down-to-earth guy from his telling stories. He began his
career in Army Air Corps and turned the first spade of dirt at the new
Shriver AFB east of CSpgs - formerly Consolidated Space Operations
Center. He was employed by the consultants we associated with and
they had a meeting out on the project site where our house was the
only residence on the property, so the meeting was there in the home
office I used. Gen. Hartinger had to use the facilities so I directed
him through the house to the bathroom. Several minutes later we
wondered where he was. There he was, talking to my wife who was busy
doing school work with our kids in the kitchen. Again displaying his
legitimate down-to-earth character, being a credentialed 4-star. Did
you know that guy?
