My mileage on the 560SEL vary greatly depending on the lead foot. The 420SEL
does not change much 19-22mpg. The 300SD has a cylinder low on compression
as such the best I have gotten is 25mpg and average around 23MPG for last
100k miles.

Best mileage is all about power to weight and gearing. The lead foot does
change things but if you want fuel mileage you need right power to weight
ratio and correct gearing. Most under powered cars like the 380SEL will get
worse mileage than a 420SEL driven roughly the same.

if you push your SDL, you can get worse mileage...in out most recent run to
mexico, 75mph or under gave us 27mpg...85-90 gave 23...at sustained 105, we
got 19mpg...pretty easy math, and the differences were well worth the
expense...
