I know from bitter bitter experience that running a 617 in an '81 300TD with no
thermostat WILL make the car overheat.
The interesting thing is that it'll go for a good 20 minutes from a cold
start (a Marshall cold start, 8 hours or more) but if you shut it off and
restart it it'll overheat rapidly.
  Wierd, just wierd.
The only explanation I can come up with is that when the coolant is all the
same temp the radiator will draw warming coolant from the engine. When its warm
and the coolant stratifies that doesn't happen any more.

IIRC running a MB OM6xx.x without a thermostat is a no-no.....

Marshall,

Are those mileage readings in your signature block
current? I think our 190Dt started less than yours but
now it has over 250K miles.
