Some friends of mine got fired from their internships for emailing each other unflattering comments about the bosses via their work email addresses (email was new to them, didn't have it at their school in the late 1980s). Nothing makes a bigger impression in your job interviews than "I interned at Dow Chemical, but they fired me before the semester was over and that's why my grade was a zero".
At least this guy achieved something epic when he got fired from his internship. Or maybe Fedgov only fires people who tell the truth (whistleblowers), and this kid is still on the job?
I suspect the meaning of "Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated." is "We fired the dipshit who thought his internship was a laughing matter".
