Replace all the fuel lines between the tank and the lift pump -- very
likely you have bad hoses and a serious air leak somewhere.

Folks
I've been having problems getting my 1982 300td to run correctly.
And yes i'm running it on WVO.
Let's see if i can give some background and tell you all the things
that i have done.
About 3 weeks ago i drove it 60 miles to atlanta and back and
basically limped home at about 40 mph.
SO, here's what i did. I drained the tank and checked that the tank
screen was clear. I blew out the tank to prefilter line. I
installed a clean prefilter and also changed the main spin on fuel
filter. No improvement.
Then i pulled all the injectors and pop tested them. Two had a very
bad spray pattern, so i replaced them with tested working
injectors. At this point the car ran pretty well, but was really
hard to start. (yes, the valves have been adjusted in the past 6000
miles)
It felt like fuel starvation and i started thinking that i have an
air leak somewhere.
At some point in all this i got a couple of ebay, allegedly Bosh
primer pumps, white box uro, i guess with the Bosch part number. I
installed one of them and didn't like the way it felt, but left it on.
Then at some point, i went to the flaps looking for a sealing
washer for the main fuel filter .... advance and autozone both had
about 3 copper washers, nothing!!
I replaced the o ring in the main filter bolt, but didn't replace
the aluminum washer. Mine is the 1 O ring 1 washer style bolt.
Killed my battery when it wouldn't start and had them charge it for
a few hours. Then i returned and did a lot of priming and got it
going.
Now i'm trying to remember what i did next. I guess i drove it a
little and it felt pretty good.
At some point in all of this i drilled the T connectors in the main
vacuum hose from pump to booster. After i did that, the key shutoff
started working again. I had been stopping the engine using the
lever under the hood.
I am now starting to think that may have over drilled because the
transmission shifts started to seem like they were a bit too soft.
I may have messed up some restriction orifice in the T.
This story goes on and on over about a month. I may have some of
this out of chronology but i'm trying.
On tuesday afternoon, i drove from Athens, GA to near Pensacola,
FL, a distance of about 450 miles each way. I was dragging a 1000
lb letterpress on the trailer on the to Pensacola. When i started
that trip, the rig would only make about 40 mph, but after a few
miles, it picked up and i ran about 65 most of the way down i-85
and 65.
I delivered the press and turned around to come back to athens. I
only shut the engine down a few times and it always started ok, but
sometimes it does a strange thing. With a hot engine, i'll try to
start it. I'll turn the engine over WAY too many times it it will
not start. THEN i'll try again and it will start instantly. It does
the same pattern every time.
Now, back to my return trip tuesday night/ wednesday. I went about
200 miles till i was on the atlanta side of montgomery and the car
would slow to about 40 mph .... then after a while it would pick up
and do better, but never more than about 60.
I changed the slightly dirty pre filter. I noticed that the new uro
trash primer pump seemed to be leaking, so i put the old bosch one
back on and it seemed to pump better and didn't leak.
So i limped home and went to sleep.
On Thursday, i messed with the car some more at the shop. I changed
a bunch of crush washers on banjo fittings on the IP and on the
filter body. I changed the fuel filter bolt with another one i had
of the same type. I had trouble getting it primed again and ran the
battery down. After charging it a while, i got it started and
drove home. About midnite last night i started the car and went to
the bank. It didn't run well. Today, i went to start ..... no joy,
i ran out of battery. I went to start my isuzu npr to use it and i
ran out of battery there, too.
So, i charged the battery for 40 minutes (6 amp charger) and got
started and delivered a 300 lb type case up into the foothills of
the mountains in Dahlonega, Ga a distance of about 60 miles. I
didn't shut down and returned to the office. The car went 60 to 65
the entire way. I returned to the office. I un hitched my trailer
and considered swapping the main vacuum hose assembly with one on
another car, but only thought about it.
I started the warm engine with the usual over cranking to no result
and then start the second try. I put it into gear and pressed the
throttle and had no increase in RPM on the tach or increased engine
sound. The engine has a slight bit of roughness at idle. With the
transmission in park or neutral, i could rev the engine, but in
gear i couldn't get any RPM. I finally got a little bit of increase
in RPM and VERY SLOWLY limped home but it wouldn't pull much of a
hill. I experimented with it a little and could get some forward
motion, but was not able to pull much of a grade.
It would go fairly well in reverse BUT when was in forward the
engine would not rev up very much. The more i tried to drive it
around, the better it did, but that wasn't very good.
Do i have a vacuum problem.
Put on your thinking caps and think about a Mercedes!
thanks,
xx rick
