I replaced the front (primary) pump in the AT of my '69 280 Sedan in the
70s. It req'd the tranny to be disassembled partially - i don't think I
had to remove the clutch packs. But it's been a long time ago. Things
went pretty well with my normal set of tools. The biggest problem (IMO)
for the home mechanic working on an AT is the need for extreme
cleanliness. The factory uses a clean room where fresh, filtered air
is forced into the room so dust can not enter as it normally would.
IIRC, the hardest part was finding a good manual. Haynes did not
do one & I finally found one published by MB which had its usual
abundant amount of descriptive language. (of course, I'm kidding). I
ended up selling that MB AT manual on eBay a few years ago for triple
what I paid for it.
I believe someone (Adsit?) may sell a AT Kit but i haven't heard
many (any?) complimentary comments about Adsit and its business practices.
Sincerely,
LarryT

I did read a write up about this a while back and from memory the only
special tool you really need is the clutch pack compressor.

It would require some effort no doubt. Sometimes special tools, but
sometimes they can be home made as well.
I cannot say I know a whole lot about it but I did do a bit of study
on the GM 700R4 at one time as I had one in my Suburban and it was
troublesome. I had it done by a shop once and was not happy with the
result. I therefore considered trying it myself but ended up selling
the vehicle before I had to do it. It still worked well enough to
drive it but it was difficult to keep it in overdrive.
In any event, there was a lot of available information for that
transmission and I read a lot fo it. Certain upgrades etc made them
sturdier.
I gather one of the primary concerns is the need to keep the parts
very clean.
