To toss in another twist, a few years ago, I bought a Georgia 300D (I live in MD). Maryland provides temp tags (usually), but I found out that when buying an out-of-state-car that Maryland provides real tages on a "hold title" procedure; instead of getting the real title now and temp tages to get the vehicle inspected, you get real tags and a temp title until you get the vehicle inspected. (And you had a year to get the inspection done instead of just 15 days!)
I'm guessing that this procedure came about because some states don't recognize temp tags. It didn't cost any extra, and all I had to do was tell the MVA folks that I was picking up the car when I handed them the out of state title and they gave me the proper forms to fill out etc. If you're flying to get the car, you'll probably want to pack real plates. I managed to get myself selected for extra screening on that trip "SSSS" on the boarding pass (Flying single, one direction, bought maybe 60 hours ahead of the flight, full beard, dark hair, a bit of a tan, etc)....
