Sad but if my information is accurate, there have been NO new refineries approved by the EPA to be built on US soil in past 25 years. As of, I believe, 2 years ago, all the refineries in North Eastern USA were closed due to extreme tightening of EPA regulations. Those refineries were the oldest in USA and the owners wanted to build new ones rather than continue to "patch them up" to meet EPA regs, but no no no.. that wouldn't do..
Bottom line.. we are "refinery capacity short" as a nation. The production from the Baken fields is increasing with no increase in refinery capacity... not a perfect storm yet, you think? Another pure case of government intervention in capitalism perhaps? Logic by legislation? Gives one wonder at why congress now has the lowest public support in history.. doesn't it..
