Leasing will put you in a car, but watch the residual they allow - you can look at past history to get an idea of what the depreciation will be like and they will usually allow either 12000 or 15K mi/yr - if you can live with <12K make sure they price a 12K and not a 15K contract. But i'm sure ya'll know that...

I was thinking the lease option might be worth considering, depending on what sorts with the situation and mileage requirements.

Seems like an old 123/126 in good shape would be just the ticket.

Otherwise a well maintained G-wagen.

I had a 2006 Sprinter that was great, but I dont like the newer ones as much.

Everybody here in LA knows better than to buy a new Merc or BMW. Lease them while they run well and pass them off for others to deal with after a few years. No trips to the mechanic and you get a new one every few years instead of driving the same car for a decade. Cost of ownership is the same unless miles are high.

New luxury cars are simply not designed to be easily or cheaply maintained. That is why they depreciate so dramatically.

OK I realize that asking for opinions from y'all is like throwing

I am trying to get out ahead of a likely need here in the next few
months for a newer car of some sort, which I would think should be
a Benz diesel. Could be a lease or purchase. Lease would be new,
purchase would be something 2-5 yr old maybe, reliability would be
the key issue for potentially a coupla thousand miles a month. I
am thinking an E or ML, maybe a GL. The 4WD (or AWD or whatever
it is) is attractive. Buying a new GL or S would be awesome, but
my lottery tickee did not win yet.

I took a look at Carmax, there are a fair number of ML diesels
around, and Es too, all 4 years or newer. A few GLs but they are
spendy. I looked at the Benz CPOs and there were a few but
pricier it seemed, maybe a bit newer inventory on average.

    Have at it.
