Depends on how busy you are and how much you value a) the time required to maintain an older eg more than 3y old car and b) driving the latest stuff. Getting a car to the mechanic and back is a real hassle for us as we both work long hours and fight la traffic. Then you pay a huge repair bill for something that should be simple but requires disassembly of half the engine eg replacing a starter at 75,000 miles on a 2008 california bmw or temp sensor melted into downpipe on 3y old touareg tdi and you wonder why you own the damned things. Then the service light comes back on and you cant smog it until that is fixed so its back to the shop again. Meanwhile wife is getting pulled over on freeway for expired tags on Saturday morning with kids in car when she needs to be in the OR. It may save money to own but for us it is looking penny wise pound foolish. New cars arent worth jack after a few years no matter what. Accountant says cost of ownership is same particularly if there is business use involved. Game, set, match to leasing. Yes check residuals and get the best deal you can.
I like my 123 tdt but only because it is cool and doesnt depreciate. Now you guys have me thinking it needs a new turbo though - kkk k26. Some shaft play less than .125 prob 0.0625. I will prob pull and take it to becs for a rebuild on general principle. 185000 mi.
