My niece's Toshiba lost its optical drive. IIRC the drive showed up in the drive list until you put a disk in it but no disk would recognize. Paid $9.99 for a used one with free shipping on eBay. Took out one screw, yanked the old drive out, shoved the 'new' one in, replaced the screw, and back in business.
