I run a 12g extension cord to a plug I put next to the dryer outlet in
the house (illegal as it is not fused for 20A...) and run it to the
garage when I want to run my jointer or big air compressor. No real
issues so far but I keep an eye on it. I did put the proper plugs on
each end with the vertical and horizontal spades. You can buy the 12g
yellow ext cord at Lowes in bulk and then put the plugs on them.

True enough. They must make 220v outdoor outlets. The house is maybe 10 feet
from the front door of the garage. The only 220v plugs in the house are the
stove and the dryer, neither of which would work so since I'd need a new outlet
anyway I'd want it outside.
In reality I don't do enough work to justify it. A $100 buzz box would satisfy
my current needs for more welding heat.
