Yes, something like that. They all are 3 liter slant 6 engines with a common lineage.

M130 and predecessor M180 are vertical 6 cyl engines of varying displacement from 2.2 to 3 L.

But you meant to mean that the 300SL's M198 (direct injection) and the
W109's M189 (indirect injection) were both modified M186, right?  The
direct injection engine in the 300Sc (M199?) was a modified M198.
