So I have the OSX 10.6 now installed on the SSD and the new 4TB HDD formatted. After the install it rebooted and asked if I wanted to transfer info. I hooked up the Time Machine backup external HD I had. I said yes and picked TM. It's now calculating amount of info on the TM backup which is 705GB. It is not going to let me transfer anything as the SSD is only 250GB and there is not enough room, and it does not seem to want to give me a choice to put all that stuff on the HDD.

Per #5, should I do something with the home folder (which is now on the SSD, right?) like somehow move it to the HDD from the SSD? How do I do that? This looks like the way https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6736134?start=0&tstart=0

And then I can do the migration asst to move everything from the TM b/u to the SSD and the machine will have all apps and data as before, but now OSX on SSD and apps/data on HDD?

It is now "Create Your Account" which I have had to do before it will let me go any further. I used the same acct info as I had before. It is spinning the wheel now for awhile, I hope it takes...

The more I think about this, I think the best strategy would be:

1.) Back up everything on your existing drive(s) to Time Machine or a disk
image.

2.) Install the OS of your choice on the SSD as previously described.

3.) Nuke your other (physical) hard drive. Wipe it clean.

4.) Assemble everything in the iMac as intended. The SSD will be your boot
drive.

5.) Before restoring anything from your backups, move your home folder to your
physical drive.

6.) Use Migration Assistant to put everything back on the machine. What can’t
be done with Migration Assistant, use Time Machine.

This will give you the cleanest install and configuration in my opinion. I’m
open to any criticisms that other Mac folks might have - I’m just trying to
think about the best and cleanest way to do this.
