I can reseat the memory, I had to remove it to do the drive installs, it
seemed to go in OK. I have had that memory for a coupla years, 4 sticks
12GB, never any issues but maybe messing with it got it buggered.
I installed the OS from the DVD. Is the 10.6.8 a full install or
just updates somehow? I can download it onto a USB stick and try to
upgrade/install from it. I'll probably do that anyway to get the file,
plug the laptop into the router with a cable to bypass the wifi and the
router's issues.
It bombed off the 10.6.8 download, now the machine appears to have gone
to sleep and won't wake up, rebooting again...
I'm wondering if I should reformat and start over, put the OS on the HDD
and TM everything to it instead of the SSD/HDD to see if that makes any
difference.

Have you replaced or upgraded the memory? I ask because this is probably the
most common problem on installs if the memory has been changed out at the same
time. Might not be a bad idea to remove and reseat it just for grins.
You shouldn’t have any problems with the install if you’re doing it straight to
an SSD. For that matter, the system doesn’t know it’s an SSD, so that has no
bearing on the install. I believe you have other problems.
What are you using to do the install, the optical drive or a USB stick?

I got the home folder moved, and the machine is booting to the new home folder
on the HDD. BUT, the thing keep crashing, I have had to restart it a bunch of
times as it gets hung on doing just about anything. I got to the part of doing
a MA of the TM backup, it wanted to put everything on the SSD so I unchecked
the old home folder (was 600some GB) and tried to start putting the other
files, which were not much, on the SSD. It got hung doing that so I shut it
down and restarted again.
I am unable to start say the system preferences then the Activity Monitor
and/or the MA, SP gets hung and the wheel just starts spinning... or much of
any combination that is not in some particular sequence.
Right now I restarted it, started up Safari, and am trying to download the
10.6.8 update and it was going fine now it is lugging along at 58KB/s and is
going to take half the night to get downloaded. I'm hoping that might get the
machine sorted out, but I'm wondering if the OSX install on the SSD did not go
well, or the SSD is not working right. It is booting quite fast though, so the
SSD has made quite a difference.
There was a significant problem too installing the OSX and actually getting through the
process, it would hang on kinda the final steps, "Create Your Accounts" which I
found to be some sort of known issue in general, bypassing all the stuff about turning on
the network, logging into AppleID, etc. finally got me mostly through it though I ended
up creating 2 or 3 accounts, then had to reformat the SSD a coupla times and do a new
install.
This has been an extremely frustrating process, I am thinking it should not be
this hard.
Now I am getting a spinning wheel outside of the Safari window, and the machine
is hung again... restarting for about the 20th time...
