Applications can run from anywhere, so not putting them in the
Applications folder is fine until you need access to them from a
different user. Only apps in the proper folder show up for other
users unless you search for them.
Glad you got it fixed -- I find the Mac so much nicer to use than a PC
precisely for this sort of reason.
