IIRC by '82 they weren't terrible engines but the damage was already done. I was talking to some old timers at a local lunch spot the other day, one guy had a diesel pickup that he plugs in, I pointed out that neither of my VWs have block heaters and the '05 doesn't even have a place to put a block heater (supposedly no freeze plugs) and neither has ever failed to start due to temps although the coldest I've ever tested was -6F just because thats the coldest its been here since I got the Jetta. I forgot to point out that I never found out how cold it had to be before a 190D wouldn't start, I tried that at like -10F... -Curt
