It IS very easy and straight forward. Like I said, SWMBO did it in less
than 10 min wearing a business suit. Late afternoon years ago, she came
driving into the yard after her day at the office (executive director of
local arts council) and parked beside the 350SDL, where I was about replace
the damper. She stepped over beside me as my shaky hands began the work and
asked, "May I help." I replied, "Yes, you may" and began to instruct her
with each step in the process. We had it done in less than 10 min.

Thanks a bunch, Wilton and Max!
Wilton, based on your description this sounds pretty straightforward and
relatively quick, too. Makes sense as well, based on my limited
understanding of the setup.
I've got some traveling and tight schedules this and next week, so I'll
probably put it off for a bit. The bushing is still there as is the
rubber, but I noticed it's loose on the bore as I can see the rubber
bushing turning in the bore while the engine is running.
Again, thanks, everyone! I think Wilton gets the "Attaboy!" for this one!

Here's is how I've replaced damper and/or tensioner spring several times
on my 91 350SDL and 87 300D: (YMMV)
DO NOT REMOVE WP PULLEY, RADIATOR OR SHROUD.
Remove bolt at upper end of damper
Remove nut on bolt at upper end of tension spring.
Using big screwdriver, MB jack handle or appropriate lever inserted into
hole on topside of upper tension spring bracket, rotate bracket to remove
pressure on upper spring bolt.
May need to push spring bolt to rear to clear the bracket (don't let
spring or upper bracket fall into possible abyss)
Push lower tension bracket (with belt pulley) downward to move damper
upward enough so that lower damper bolt clears WP pulley
Remove lower damper bolt toward front
Reinstall in reverse order.
WHEN REINSTALLING TENSION SPRING, MAKE SURE LOWER HOOK END OF SPRING IS
FULLY AND PROPERLY HOOKED ON PIN IN BRACKET - NOT JUST CAUGHT
TEMPORARILY ON VERY END OF SPRING. GUESS HOW I KNOW.
BTW, under my guidance, SYMBOL, in her business suit, replaced damper on
the 350SDL in less than 10 min 10 or 12 years ago when my tremor was
really bad.

I need to replace the little shock absorber on my car - Curly says that
I have to pull the tensioner to do it.
I’m wondering how that lower bolt that connects the shock to the
tensioner is attached? The outside (facing the water pump pulley) is
the bolt head form the looks of things, but the back side appears to be
a socket head cap screw. Is the front a nut rather than a bolt head?
It would seem that if you could loosen the bolt you might be able to
move it out enough to get the shock mount out. If not, maybe if I took
the bolts out of the water pump pulley I could do it.

I used the adjacent hole as pictured below, installed new condenser,
put everything back together and it seems to work fine. Car is on the
machine right now getting s vacuum pulled then a recharge.
