That is a good question!

Perhaps the notes in the PDF are helpful:

Notes: I successfully replaced my stock 70A alternator with a
143A unit on my 1987 300D. It required using the old
pulley (actually I ordered a new one, 604-155-00-15)
and upgrading the wire to the battery area. But it
physically fit and worked perfectly, with more than
double the output at idle (100A vs. 45A) and voltage
at 14.2v instead of 13.8v. I purchased two 143A units
used - typical cost is $75-$150, but you can find them
cheaper if you wait long enough. Search www.car-part.com,
the 143 amp units were used on 1996-99 S and SL-class
            M119 V8 engines (420/500) only. The 150A units are
            found on M113 engines - 1998-up 430/500 - E, CLK, S,
            and ML 430; C43, E55; and 2000+ S500.
