I found out the same thing several years ago.   My old house had knob and tube 
wiring in the detached garage.  They agreed to insure the house but not the 
garage.  But, they did allow me to replace the knob and tube within 30 days and 
then they insured it also.  It wasn't so bad because the previous owner had 
replaced the wiring from the house to the garage, so I only had to replace the 
stuff in the garage and it wasn't that bad.
