You seem to imagine that the prices being asked and given actually correlate with the car's condition. Sometimes they do, but often cars sell for MUCH more or less than logic would suggest. Who's to say that the seller knows anything about the value of the car to anyone but him/herself?

You need to be able to reliably determine the condition of the car and then pay no more than it's worth TO YOU. Then you're in charge. If you don't have the skill and knowledge to do that, the risk is very great.
