Well, vac pump, the timer, timer bushing, and IP are all suspect. When
I took off the vac pump, the bolt that is supposed to hold the timer to
the IP fell out. It was all chewed up, so I'm guessing the IP is
FUBAR. The timer is loose and wobbling, so the bushing at least is
busted. I hope the block casting is tough in there. At a minimum, it
will take a new bushing and IP and bolt. I am betting the timer is
messed up too. The vacuum pump may be salvageable, but I have not
determined that yet.
Near as I can tell, the bolt came out and this led to the cascade of
problems.
To change the bushing, the front pan, oil pump and lower rail probably
have to come off/out.
I have a lot of other stuff to do tomorrow, so I won't know for sure
until I get the IP out to see the damage inside.

Maybe something broke in the vacuum pump/pump timer area?
