There "is" a definite way but it can be pretty cruel.

A "high society lady", who lived in a small town, decided to pitch a party for
the other "high society" folks. She sent her part time maid out in the woods
behind the house to pick mushrooms for a dish she was preparing for the party.
After the dish was cooked she put some of it in the food dish for Old Spot, the
"backyard dog", to be sure none of the mushrooms were poisonous.

That evening the meal was served to her guests and she received many
compliments on the mushroom casserole.

She had, however, forgotten to check on Spot so she asked the maid.

"He's dead", said the maid.

The lady went into a panic, told everyone the mushrooms must have been
poisonous, and called the towns doctors who rushed out with stomach pumps.

After all the guests stomachs had been pumped and they had left in a dark mood,
the maid came into the kitchen and said, "You know, ma'am, that car that hit
Old Spot didn't even slow down."

Still, feeding questionable mushrooms to a dog is a pretty good test of whether
they are poisonous or not IMO.
