The only place I disagree with you here is computer nerds. If a tech shows up
and he's totally put together he's probably not very good. The best techs
rarely know about soap...
My company tried to institute a dress code years ago that included a dress
shirt and tie. There was a revolt, finally somebody took the offending VP to a
customer site. The editor there was sitting with his feet up wearing flip
flops, cargo shorts and a mohawk. It was explained to her that these customers
had no respect for anybody in a shirt and tie and it was absurd to expect phone
support people to dress that way. When I was in phone support we had the tie of
shame. If you screwed up bad you were required to wear it for a week...

My elder son works with a group of artsy people who have become pretty
loose in what they wear to work -jeans, t-shirts, scruffy beards etc.
Some of them had become like hippies. Some of them were taken aside by
the head honcho and told to improve their look. It was suggested to
them, that if they did not know what to do, that they should watch what
my son wears. He has always been a "preppie" sort and dresses pretty
conservatively. A good thing when one represents the office when sent
out to a jobsite to deal with clients etc. The firm is charging clients
good money for him and he needs to look like he is worth it.
