In the Eagle River area, they have mostly don to leasing New Holland (Frod) tractors (4WD) for the trail groomers. I think they just rent the tractors for the months they are needed, then the stealers sell them to farms for a little discount.

The PB sounds like more fun , but I am sure the NH ride is more comfortable with heat and a tight cab.

So as a follow up to my getting the ASV started yesterday I thought maybe you'd like to see it:

Here with the Golf for size comparison:https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4692/38831788994_6328cf950f_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4726/27764530599_98f43af108_b.jpgThis is the battery bay. Nearly $300 in batteries there. In the foreground you can see the heatgun I used to get the machine started. When I got to it the air filter (behind the rear battery) was out already so I just stuck the heatgun in there. In the future I'll probably just pull the cap. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4686/24672933297_09ca494cab_b.jpgThis is a Tucker Sno-Cat, the club has 2 of these. They're "Glorified farm equipment" which is to say they're pretty simple, Cummins 4BT, 4 spd auto trans. The ASV has a computer controlled John Deere V6, the cool thing about it is you just stomp your foot down and it maintains speed depending on what gear you're in. The other machines you have to use your foot to vary engine speed to match conditions. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4637/38644526375_720c498458_b.jpgThis is the big boy, Pisten Bulley PB200, its got a Mercedes inline 6cyl. I think its the oldest machine we have, '85 I think. Its 10.5 feet wide, the ASV is only 6. Part of my run is under a railroad trestle where the path is only 8 feet wide, the Pisten Bulley is much faster but doesn't fit. I've run the PB some too, its what I learned on. Finally a shot from the operators seat:https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4680/38831785094_b125ba296a_b.jpgI should have gotten one of my backtrail, we call it "making the white ribbon". Long night, we met at 7:30, the Pisten Bulley was fighting bad fuel and had ice in one of the hydraulic pumps so we didn't get out until 8:30 or 9. Then I lost the trail and got stuck into a place I now call "The Hellhole" which was the exact size of the machine, backing out of there was miserable and cost me probably an hour. Got home at 3am but on the positive note we didn't break down and although I very nearly ripped the mirrors off I think I can re-align them...
