Since this car supposedly has a rebuilt tranny, I would CERTAINLY like to
keep it in working order! I was even told by someone to leave the engine
running to lubricate the tranny which also saves the driveshaft removal job.
An Italian Tuneup would definitely be in order after that! It is a 3 hour
trip, quite a lot of idling, but how long would it take to crawl under there
to remove the driveshaft from the rear flex disk?

Kevin,

Letting the engine idle while towing it is a viable alternative, especially
if it is only 3 hours. I used to let my 240D idle all day while skiing at
Lake Tahoe. It didn't start well at high altitude and cold weather. I turned
down the idle to about 300 RPM, good for engine braking on ice, and
disconnected the shutoff lever at the IP. Then you can turn off the key and
lock the
vehicle. If yours has the vacuum shutoff, just pull the vacuum hose out of
the shutoff diaphragm on the IP.

I used less than 1 gallon of fuel for 8 hours so I don't think it will run
rich enough to cause any carboning up.
