I thought the M-B COULD be towed without disconnecting the driveshaft.

Slowly, and not far.  At least according to the manual.

To disconnect the driveshaft you'll have to also loosen the
clamping collar in the center and the center bearing support.
This so that the driveshaft can be collapsed enough to release
the centering collar at the differential end and gain clearance
away from the spinning yoke.  It's a pain!

I have a trailer.  This is one big reason why.
