I hear you but the whole issue of being "green" requires more than just trying to wean us off of fossil fuels. Things like vehicles either need to be viable long term or very recycle-able or we won't have gained much. I am not a true believer in the global warming or climate change argument but I do think we need to be less wasteful in many ways. Throw away cars are a problem. I don't go to the junk yards often but when I do, I am amazed at the number of late model cars sitting there wasting away. I remember a time when there were lots of old cars on the roads. That may, in many cases, not have been a good thing either but it did have its virtues. Cars were maintained to a considerable extent and were used up over time. Now, folks would rather sign up for another monthly payment on a new piece of junk than pay the cost of new brakes all way around. Drive trains do not wear like they used to and bodies don't rust like they did so why are we throwing away perfectly good transportation because some electrical doo-dad has given up and the part is either stupidly expensive or unavailable? It should not be permitted. These little bits should be common and available everywhere.

I agree with you Randy, but that approach (modular and common

boring cars designed for the lowest common denominator. They'll be pure
appliances at that point, absolutely joyless to ride in, as we won't be
allowed to drive, too risky.

Karl has extolled the virtues of electric cars with drive-trains that a far
less complex and far more durable, only electric motors and the controllers
and replaceable batteries. That may be true. Maybe a simple 240D-like
electric car with no bells or whistles will last 50 years, but I don't
think anyone is making them - no market because we are a
consume-and-throw-away society.

Pierre is right, keep an old classic around and enjoy it. In another 50
years they'll still be in operation, won't be many cars from 1996 or later
still around.
