I can't resist the opportunity to quote the best automotive writer ever, the
late, lamented (even if he did hate diesels) L.J.K. Setright---from his book
"Mercedes-Benz SL and SLC":

"Always thorough, Daimler-Benz put a secondary oil pump in their automatic
transmission so that the 450 could be towed, making it surely the first car
designed to be reliable even in the broken-down state."

Mercedes cautions that the car should not be towed further than about 50 miles!
