When I was a kid, people used to rub DMSO on their joints. I seem to recall somebody saying that WD40 was Kerosene and DMSO back then, but I just looked it up and it seems to be mostly Naptha. Anyway, I can't find any reference to sulfates in WD, so I doubt it used DMSO for a penetrating additive.
