Or a rod went, only way to check is to get the oil pan off or check for 
hydrolock.  Usually, though, when the rods bend the cylinders go oval fast 
enough they won't hydro-lock for any length of time, the oil drains out past 
the rings.

For it to be stuck both directions, though, you'd have to have a thrown rod or totally seized 
bearings.  Believe it or not, some people don't seem to think knock and clanking are abnormal 
noises, my buddy Hans got a six cylinder in one that was "making some noise" -- #1 pison 
was in the pan in pieces, with the naked rod thrashing around in the empty cylinder.  Horrendous 
noise.  Owner "hadn't really noticed" anything.....
