Androids tie you into gulag and gummit spyware.   Ifone ties you into apfel somewhat, but they so far have done a better job of protecting personal data.  Apfel gives you and option to send data or not.    Gummit pretty much gets anything they want, legal or not.  Regardless of platform.

Buy a cheep flipfone and get a minutes card with cash from Dollar Genral.   That way you can be anonymous to some extent.  (at least as long as nobody calls you.)

Merry Christmas!

Can anyone explain how these high-priced handsets are better than the econo
models I own?

They aren't.
Samsung models come chock full of bloatware, and iPhones tie you into
the Apple infrastructure. Apple may not be a bad choice IF you are already
a Mac head, but they are pricey.

I have a Moto G5+ that is several generations old now, and still quite fast
enough
for anything I need it for.

Thanks and Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you and yours
