If I didn't have specialty applications to support I'd run Ubuntu Linux. Its
stable, easy to use, easy to install and comes with a bunch of productivity
stuff built right in.
Kaleb needs to back up his data and reinstall Windows from fresh media. I NEVER
upgrade an OS if I can help it. All you're doing is bringing bits of the old OS
along which at best gives you a mish-mosh of stuff and at worst sets you up for
misery.

Given that Microsoft supports way more hardware and configurations than
Apple's closed system, they do a very good job. Most issues like Kaleb's
are self-inflicted, or the result of dying hardware.
